A mini-split has three main parts: the indoor head on your wall or ceiling, the outdoor unit beside the house, and the line set that connects them through the wall. When something goes wrong, the symptom usually shows up in one of those three places, and that location says a lot about what the repair is likely to involve.
ClassicABC Heating & Air repairs ductless systems in Carrollton homes and businesses by tracing each problem to where it lives, then explaining the fix before work begins. Our team brings over 40 years of industry experience to every repair call.

Start by noting where the symptom shows up. This table pairs common Carrollton repair calls with where the problem usually sits and what a technician checks.
| Symptom and location | What the technician checks |
|---|---|
| Indoor head: water running down the wall below it | Drain pan, condensate line slope and blockage, condensate pump if used, and coil condition |
| Indoor head: air coming out weak or barely cool | Filter and coil cleanliness, blower wheel buildup, fan speed and refrigerant performance |
| Indoor head: fan rattling, whirring or ticking | Blower wheel balance and debris, motor bearings, louver motor and loose covers |
| Indoor head: no response to the remote | Remote batteries and signal, the head’s receiver and control board, and power to the unit |
| Outdoor unit: fan and compressor not running while the head blows | Power supply and disconnect, capacitor or board faults, communication wiring and safety lockouts |
| Line set: frost or ice on the copper lines near the wall | Refrigerant charge, airflow across the indoor coil, flare connections and insulation on the lines |
| Line set: oily residue at a connection or along the cover | Possible refrigerant leak at flares or fittings and line set damage |
This table helps you describe what you see. It is not a diagnosis; the technician’s testing on site determines the real cause.
Condensation is supposed to leave through the drain line to the outside. Drips on the wall, floor or furniture below the head mean water is not taking its intended path.
If the head runs for hours and the room stays a few degrees warmer than the remote says, the system may be losing capacity from dirt, airflow loss or refrigerant problems.
Every system has its normal hum. Grinding, clicking, rattling or a high-pitched whine that was not there before is worth a call.
If the indoor fan runs but the outdoor unit never starts, the system is only moving air, not cooling it.
A thin film of frost on copper lines during cooling is not normal in Carrollton summers. It often points to airflow or refrigerant issues.
Most drips come from a clogged or poorly sloped condensate line, a dirty drain pan or a failed condensate pump. Sometimes a heavily soiled coil causes water to blow off rather than drain. Repairs typically involve clearing and flushing the drain, correcting slope, cleaning the pan and coil, or replacing a pump.
Mini-split blower wheels are long, barrel-shaped fans that collect dust and biological growth over time. A coated wheel moves less air and can become unbalanced, causing noise. Repair may mean a thorough cleaning, or replacing a damaged wheel or worn fan motor.
When a head will not respond, the issue may be as simple as the remote, or as involved as a failed receiver, sensor or indoor control board. The technician checks power, signal and board operation to separate a controller problem from an equipment fault.
The outdoor unit contains the compressor, the condenser fan and the inverter electronics. If it does not start, causes range from power interruption and a tripped protection to a failed capacitor, fan motor, sensor or board. Some repairs are straightforward part replacements; compressor failures are more significant and often raise the repair-or-replace question.
Frost along the suction line during cooling usually means the refrigerant is getting too cold, often because of low charge or restricted airflow at the indoor coil. The repair involves finding the root cause, which may be a leak at a flare connection, damage to the copper, or a dirty coil, rather than just adding refrigerant.
Sun, lawn equipment and pets can damage the insulation and covers on exterior line sets. Missing insulation can cause sweating, energy loss and in some cases frost. Replacing the insulation and cover protects the lines.
Some symptoms start in one place and show up in another. A refrigerant leak at an outdoor flare connection can cause weak cooling at the head and frost along the lines. A clogged indoor coil can reduce airflow enough to ice the line set outside. That is why a good ductless repair does not stop at the first thing that looks wrong. The technician follows the refrigerant and airflow path from the head through the line set to the outdoor unit, so the repair addresses the cause instead of just the most visible symptom. On multi-zone systems, comparing how each head performs also helps narrow down whether the issue is local to one room or shared by the whole system.
The technician asks which room, which part of the system and when you first noticed the issue.
Filters, coil, blower wheel, drain and controls are inspected and the head is operated to observe the symptom.
The outdoor unit, line set, insulation and flare connections are examined and system pressures and temperatures are measured as needed.
You hear what failed, where, and what the repair involves, with pricing before work begins.
The repair is completed and the system is operated in cooling, and heating if applicable, to confirm it is working.
| Situation | Repair usually fits | Replacement may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Location of failure | Drain, fan, sensor or a single board | Compressor or major outdoor unit failure on an older system |
| Refrigerant leaks | A single accessible leak at a flare | Repeated leaks or a corroded coil |
| System age | Relatively young equipment | Aging equipment with growing repair needs |
| Parts | Parts readily available | Parts discontinued or hard to source |
| Comfort | Room was comfortable before the failure | Room never cooled well or its use has changed |

Long North Texas summers keep outdoor units running for extended periods. Heat and dust on the condenser coil make components work harder and can bring out weaknesses.
Expansive clay soils can shift ground-mounted pads. Movement can stress line set connections over time, which is one reason flare connections are checked during repairs.
Occasional hard freezes, like the February 2021 winter storm, can be hard on outdoor equipment used for heating. Ice buildup and drainage around the unit are worth checking afterward.
| Mistake | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Chipping ice off the line set | Can damage copper or insulation; let it melt and call |
| Running a dripping head for days | Water can damage drywall and flooring |
| Repeatedly resetting a tripping breaker | The trip is protecting the system; it needs diagnosis |
| Spraying cleaners into the blower wheel | Can damage components and push debris deeper |
| Topping off refrigerant without finding a leak | The problem returns and the leak persists |

It varies, but drains, fans and sensors in the indoor head are frequent repair points. The technician confirms the actual cause.
Yes. In that case the head moves room air without cooling it.
Not during summer cooling. It usually signals an airflow or refrigerant issue.
More moisture means more condensate. A partially blocked drain may keep up on dry days but overflow on humid ones.
Loose covers, debris in the blower wheel or a worn motor are common causes.
The issue is likely in that head’s receiver, board or power rather than the remote.
Yes. Let us know the height and location so the technician arrives prepared.
Some issues affect only one head, while outdoor unit problems affect every zone.
Damaged insulation can cause sweating and efficiency loss, so it is worth replacing.
If it is leaking, iced or tripping breakers, turn it off. Otherwise ask when you call.
Yes. See our ductless heating services for winter-related problems.
